Although Herzog Hospital is the third largest hospital in the Jerusalem area, it receives no government funding. The coverage the Hospital receives from the National Health Insurance covers the cost of treating each patient admitted and nothing more. Therefore, any expense outside of the actual patient treatment, such as renovations, new or upgraded equipment, staff training, improvements or comforts, has to be raised through donations. Without the generosity of donors, the patients would find themselves in a dismal, ill-equipped building from the Sixties, without central air or heating, without state-of-the-art treatment facilities and without medical staff kept up-to-date with the latest developments in their respective fields.
